The message that Albert Einstein left written for the people of the year 6939

Albert Einstein described the humanity of his time as follows: “People living in different countries kill each other at irregular time intervals, so that also for this reason anyone who thinks about the future must live in fear and terror.”

This message was written by Einstein for humanity that lived in the year 6939. But why precisely this year?

A public relations man for the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Corporation named G. Edwards Pendray, a rocket enthusiast and science fiction writer, devised a time capsule. A time capsule is an airtight container built to store messages and objects from the present to be found by future generations. The expression time capsule has been used since 1937, although the idea is as old as the first human settlements in Mesopotamia (now Iraq).

This capsule created by Pendray would be buried for 5,000 years, until the year 6939.

It was 2.28 meters tall, weighed 363 kg and had an inside diameter of 16 centimeters. Westinghouse named it after Cupaloy, an alloy of nickel and silver, which is harder than steel.

At the World’s Fair, Westinghouse saved space by enclosing ten million words on microfilm. They included, ironically, how to build a microfilm reader, since there wasn’t one in the time capsule.

Some intellectuals and celebrities even volunteered to write messages to civilization that would open the time capsule. Thomas Mann wrote bitterly: “We now know that the idea of the future as a ‘better world’ was a fallacy of the doctrine of progress.” Albert Einstein left the aforementioned message, the full version of which reads as follows:

We live in a time rich in creative intelligence, whose expressions have to considerably enhance our lives. Today we cross the seas thanks to the force developed by man, and we also use that energy to relieve humanity of exhausting muscular work. We learned to fly and we are capable of sending messages and news without any difficulty to the most remote parts of the world, by means of electric waves. However, the production and distribution of goods is completely disorganized, so that the majority have to live in fear of the possibility of being eliminated from the economic cycle, and thus suffer the lack of what is necessary. In addition, the inhabitants of the different nations kill each other at regular intervals, so that also, due to this cause, everyone who thinks about the future must feel fear and terror. This anomaly is due to the fact that the intelligence and character of the masses are far inferior to the intelligence and character of the few who produce something of value for the community. I trust that posterity will read these statements with a sense of justice and the need for a change in the situation.
